The iPhone 3g is now jailbroken (non-app store app installation) AND now unlockable (for non-ATT folks). Its a simple process, and you can install things like NES emulators, Qik! video blogging, turn-by-turn GPS navigation, SIP softphones and all kinds of cool stuff that will never end up on the App store. Yellowsn0w (with the zero, yes!) is the nifty unlocking app that does the magic of allowing non AT&T SIM cards (like prepaid cards) to work easily with the iPhone. The key is just to read everything before jumping in and mucking around. If you follow instructions well, this has great rewards!
Installing Leopard on a Dell Mini 9
February 6, 2009OK, this is cool, and useful. I recently bought a Dell Mini 9 netbook for less than $250 through Dell’s Outlet website. It is a thoroughly capable machine for my wife, who does the occasional Facebook, email and web browsing, and not a whole lot else. It took a little learning but its a pretty well-documented process. Now I have one fewer Windows machine in the house to troubleshoot!
DNS-321 NAS Hacking
February 5, 2009OK, my first ‘geek’ post. Guess it has begun. I bought one of these nifty boxes to replace my current fileserver which was, uh, not so great. I put double 1TB drives in it in a RAID 1 and now have 1TB of mirrored backup safety bliss. Gonna be great for the kids movies and all the home media to have in one place. What I did not know before buying this thing is it is totally hackable. You can run all kinds of cool apps on the little server. Torrent clients, FireFly media server, the works… Check these fine links from brainer folks than me:
